Obituary of Herbert Du Val III

HERBERT DU VAL III passed away on Monday, April 4, 2022. He was born on May 4, 1941, in Schenectady, New York to the former Herbert DuVal II and Vivian Kramer DuVal. Herb is survived by his wife, Madonna; son, Alexander Kramer DuVal and stepson, Kevin Morrow and wife, Angela Hale Morrow and two granddaughters, Rachel and Nora, both 10 years old. Herb and his brother, David, and parents moved to Huntington, Long Island, New York in when Herb was 10. He lived there until going off to first Cornell University and then University of Michigan where he graduated with a degree in English specializing in Theater. After graduation, he moved to Washington, DC where he attended Catholic University and taught high school. He was chosen to tour with Catholic University’s touring company where he traveled the country bringing Shakespeare to grade and high school students. Then came New York City where Herb performed in many Off Off Broadway theaters as well as touring the country with Equus and Children of a Lesser God. In the summer of 1981, Herb was hired by the University of Toledo Summerstage Theater to act in 3 plays with the University theater students. Donna was the Business Manager of the Theater Department. A mad summer romance ensued, and Donna followed Herb to New York City in the Spring of 1982. The next 25 years were filled with acting, directing, teaching and most importantly, the adoption of Alex in 1990. Herb was an exemplary father, who filled Alex’s early years with adventure, creation, and exploration, and instilled a love for learning that has never faltered. In 2015, the family moved to Cincinnati to be with mothers, family and friends. Herb’s first job was in Middletown trying to revive a floundering theatre company. In Cincinnati, Louisville, Dayton, and NKU, Herb acted in numerous productions, Sunshine Boys being his last. Herb founded and produced Play With Your Lunch that performed around Cincinnati for many years. Herb was also a gifted playwright and had several of his plays produced and read in and around Cincinnati. Herb’s final chapter was as a lifeguard for the YMCA.. He worked at the downtown Y before it was renovated and at the Melrose Y until illness took over. A Celebration of Life for Herb will be held on his birthday, May 4. Details to follow.
