My heart breaks to only just hear of Jennifer's passing. I want her family to know that Jen had a tremendous impact on me. I struggled with math my entire life and I was reluctant to come back to college after 10 years. I worked really hard and came to the math lab 3-4 times a week while attending UCBA last year. She was always so patient, understanding, helpful, and, honestly, I thought she was just plain cool. We talked about food, recipes, and travel quite a bit. Thanks to her, I got an A in both college algebra and calculus which helped me to get accepted into a Masters of Accountancy program. Thank you, Jen! I will miss you.

Jennifer, you will live in my memory forever. One of my fondest memories is when you were about 4 years old. Gran wrapped a huge box for you to have under the tree. Inside she hid a toy that would sound like someone knocking and then yell "Hey!! let me out!!" So everytime the little man in the box would call out, you would say, "Ok, I'm coming!" and you would work that much harder to get the box unwrapped. Watching you unwrap that Christmas present was such a joy and still a great memory. I still remember your little laugh when Gran told you that a neighbor's name was 'Boo". When you asked, "Boo, who?" (wanting his last name) and when you realized what you said....you laughed and giggled. Every time we passed that house, you would ask, "Boo Who lives there??" and just laugh your sweet little innocent laugh..........Love you forever......your V.

I am so sorry to hear of the tragic passing of Jennifer. I was tutored by Jennifer for 3 years while I was at UC Blue Ash. I remember during Covid she met with me 3 or 4 times a week to help me with my school work, and without her I would not have made it through my classes. She always gave me as much time as I needed, and was so incredibly patient. My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you mourn the loss a such a wonderful person.

I am so proud to have known Jennifer as a colleague. She was dedicated, caring, and so smart. I awarded her the 2020 Student -Centered Staff Award because she was so well known for just being kind and awesome. A person is so much more than their last, desperate act, and I will remember Jennifer's kindness and the way that she wanted students to appreciate math like she did and be successful. I am grateful to have known her. Sincerely, Robin Lightner Dean UCBA

I am so saddened to hear of Jennifer's passing. I'll remember her fondly as a childhood neighbor and friend off of Huntgate Woods, and a classmate at Clover Hill, graduating together in 2003. Please accept my sincerest condolences, and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I write this with a deep feeling of loss and sadness. I knew Jennifer at UC Blue Ash. I would drop by the Math Lab to talk to Heather and Jennifer about math and life. Just last year I worked more closely with Jennifer in the Math Lab as the director. Last week Jennifer, Colin, and I got excited about the domain and range of the inverse secant. I can't imagine anyone else I can turn to to discuss the beauty of mathematics like this. Jennifer truly loved tutoring and teaching the students at UC Blue Ash. She was super smart: she knew so much math, physics, and statistics. I have never met anyone who could approach a student and be able to immediately answer their questions—without looking anything up, without googling. She was the best tutor, so many students sought her out. Jennifer listened, gently probed, explained, and asked questions of the students, allowing students to answer their own questions and feel accomplished. She always emphasized to me how important it is to treat each person with respect. She wanted her students to feel included, important, and empowered. She didn’t just talk to students about their math problems, she was there for them to discuss their lives. She cared. On September 7, 2022 Jennifer sent me her thoughts on what she does as a tutor and advice on how to be a good tutor. It is painful to read because she was so amazing. I will frame her words and put them up in the Math Lab as a forever reminder of what a great person Jennifer was. She will always be part of the Math Lab at UC Blue Ash where she made a huge impact on students’ lives. She has made a huge impact on my life. I will miss her. Rachel Frankel
Jennifer’s Description of Math Tutoring:
I utilize the Socratic method whenever possible when I work with students. The following describes my typical interactions and strengths as an academic tutor.
When meeting a new student in the Math Lab, I make them feel welcome by introducing myself and I get to know a little about their personality by asking open questions to help them feel at ease talking to me. After assessing their level of comfort/shyness, I ask them to describe what they need help with. When explaining or describing a topic to a new student I will ask them to describe to me where they think they should start first; this enables me to make clearer judgements about their level of understanding. By asking a student to reflect on their understanding with a lot of leading questions, they will typically get much more out of a session because their metacognition improves after time. While these are typical interactions with a student, everyone is different, and a large part of my effectiveness as a tutor comes from my ability to judge a particular student’s level of aptitude, comfort, and independence. I believe that, because of my experience, I am an excellent judge of a student’s comfort level either academically or socially. Many students in remedial courses benefit from an increase in confidence, so I encourage them to work through as much as they can until they feel more comfortable answering a problem on their own; even small accomplishments can greatly improve their academic independence. While not actively working with a student in the ML, I make sure that my body language and face read as open and available, so that students do not feel hesitant to ask for my help. Being knowledgeable in all subject areas is also extremely important, and over the years I have spent a lot of time learning about all of the subjects we offer in the department, so that I can more efficiently and effectively help students. I frequently refresh on topics and try to stay aware of important changes in course curriculums from instructors and students.
Some best practices (and things to avoid) that I would advise for a new tutor are:
• Ask the student as many questions as you can (within constraints of our demand) to encourage them to apply critical thinking skills.
• Small ice breakers can be useful to get a student to open up and feel comfortable, as math anxiety is common (what class are you taking, what’s your name, etc.).
• Do your best to ensure that students are comfortable asking for help and how to do so (raising a hand or using the red cups).
• Students may feel overwhelmed if they are struggling or behind in their course. If they have many topics to cover at once, break down their studies into small chunks and “assign” them small tasks to check their understanding. Try not to move on until a concept is mastered and encourage this as much as possible.
• Use a tutoring session to demonstrate and explain good study habits, such as going over notes after class, summarizing information, parsing their study time into more and smaller sessions, creating formula sheets, etc. The WSSC has excellent handouts and seminars aimed at improving study skills.
• Try not to simply work through a problem fully without checking their understanding often, as this may stunt their independence and comprehension of the material. This can also cause a student to become too reliant on us to do their problems for them.
• Stay aware of how busy the room is and try not to spend too much time with a student during busy periods. This can be difficult at times, but if a student demands more of your time, remind them that others need help too.
• Finding an example problem (i.e., from a book or notes) can be useful if you need a reference to work through but try to provide written explanation whenever possible. This allows for the most engaging tutoring experience and also highlights your thought process as you work. This is especially important if you have not worked with the student yet and are unsure of their level or confidence.
• Avoid interrupting students (or other tutors) whenever possible. Allow students the time to reflect on the examples and always encourage them to be independent. The exception to this is when students are new to the ML, because checking on them more frequently may help them feel more at ease and comfortable asking for your help.
• Encourage students to collaborate with their classmates if they feel comfortable doing so. Peer-led study groups are very effective for learning, retention and forming good study habits.
• Collaborate and work with your fellow tutors to help students as efficiently as possible. For example, share knowledge or ideas for explaining concepts. Try to be aware of the level of demand in the room and support your fellow tutors by being efficient and concise when there are many students needing assistance.
• Be kind and sensitive to every person without exception. Abide by the golden rule. If a student causes disruptions to others: remind them that others are trying to study, speak with them privately, suggest they use a private room (esp for large groups), or seek the aid from another staff member. We see a diverse group of students and we should strive to be as fair as possible in offering our help and compassion.

I am a student at UC Blue Ash who had Jen my freshman year of class, & saw her a lot in the math lab. I would always go to get help and Jen would always ask me how I was doing or about my day. She was always willing to help me and feel welcome. She was definitely one of my favorite in the math lab. She will be missed dearly. I am so sorry for your loss.
