Prayers to the family – my heart goes out to all of you.
Mark and I lived on the same street (Cleveland Ave.) in South Milford. We did grow up together. Attended Milford South, Junior High, and Milford High School. We probably were doing something together weekly if not daily growing up.
Sports – We were at the O’Connell’s playing basketball or finding ways to use the court for other games. We hung out in the Novitiate (now Sem Villa) where they had a great sandlot, handball and tennis courts, sled riding hills, woods, tree climbing, access to the Little Miami river (which where we were not allowed but we kept that secret), and even an abandoned set of farm buildings where we hunted criminals – well, pretend ones. We created many forts, played many war games, and always were competing with each other and against others. He was a great teammate. He was a Milford Eagle and to all of us who played sports at Milford, that was an honor. I will never forget when we had running races at South Milford and Mark won – I think 5th or 6th grade. That got to me because I too liked to win. But Mark told us all that the reason he was so fast was because he ate a ton of mashed potatoes for lunch. He did just that. So, guess what – each lunch before the races, a lot of us were trying to eat as much of the mashed potatoes as we can. I found that all I had was a full stomach and Mark continued to win. He probably knew the results from the very beginning.
Mark was tall but a small forward in HS. He was thin and had long arms. I called him “Bone” in HS. He was one of the best at rebounding because he constantly was moving and just snuck around the big guys and found a way to get the rebound and put it back up for a basket. Anytime we got a defensive rebound, I looked deep because Mark was good at cherry-picking to the other end. He had lots of steals and quick baskets and loved to shoot from the corner. He was a team player – never felt he was a ball hog.
Night games – kick the can was a favorite we would play at the McKees. Mark always had a great hiding place and was very sneaky at finding ways to kick the can to free up others. Sleep out nights, wandering around the neighborhood when we weren’t allowed, and swimming at the Brewsters.
The Corner – This was the spot for all of us to meet right after dinner or before dinner. We would sit on the fence and talk, make up stories, and plan what we would do next. The Corner was diagonal across from the Gerhardt house. If any of us wanted to find Mark, he was there or outside in his yard playing. We used to build ramps for our bikes and see who could jump the highest. During the winter, Mark would find a way to freeze up the Gerhardt driveway so we could slide down to the garage.
His smile – devious at times but always there. The devious part was his mind seemed to find ways for pranks on fellow students and teachers. Mark also had a great talent as swallowing air and then burping the loudest you have ever heard. In grade school, his teachers would ask him to stop while the rest of us laughed hard.
Just wonderful memories. All of them.
I was always hoping to see Mark at our class reunions. He didn’t come until our last one. I heard he was battling Alzheimer’s, but he had many memories that we talked about. It was just good to see him because we had lost touch. I am so sad he is now gone. My heart goes out to the Gerhardt family as I know they are missing him too.
Be at rest my friend. GO EAGLES!!!
Charlie Christy

Mark and I grew up together, went through school together were neighbors and also charter members South Milford’s cast of characters during the late 1960s and early 1970s. We were both Boy Scouts in Troop 128 and Mark’s Dad was our Scoutmaster. I have so many memories of those times that include Mark, from playing nighttime games of Kick the Can to swimming in Brewster’s domed, heated pool in the dead of winter. At one time early in Junior High, Mark and I were both sweet on Karen and Kay DeMonge, respectively. Mark was a true character. Affable, gregarious and a well-documented (and self-admitted) mischief maker. He loved to laugh and was always ready for a prank. He was also a fierce competitor, as he regularly demonstrated with his Milford High Eagle teammates on the basketball court. He made a lasting and positive impression on so many people, as is evidenced by the many messages of sympathy and condolence from friends and former classmates. While I had not seen Mark since High School, I can’t help but smile when thinking about him. I hope this knowledge and these words bring some comfort to his family and friends in the days and months ahead. Rest In Peace, Mark.
The photos I am sharing include an image from 1968, where Mark had scrambled his way to the top of the backyard basketball hoop at my house on Mill Street, an image of Mark with an axe from our Boy Scout trip to Great Smoky Mountain National Park in the summer of 1969 and an image of Mark leading the charge onto the basketball court for a home game during our Senior year.

I loved being at the girls softball and soccer games with Mark. He was always cheering for Taylor and my daughter and the whole team, and never held back when he thought there was a bad call. Jen and I would laugh until we cried, watching how animated he was in, waiting for him to get kicked out of games. And he would just look at us with a devilish smile, knowing exactly what he was doing!

Ooh, so sad.
Mark was always so much fun to be around. He cracked me up. He was one to engage, from conversation to confrontation, he was one of those people who are ready to go. And I liked that.
He came from a beautiful family, From his Dad on down.
His brother Gary, Mark (They both were “hoopers”)
and myself were on the same “Eagles” 74’ Basketball team (Coach Hurley). That was one “bad ace” frontcourt.
If you needed to laugh, you needed to have Mark around, if you need to battle he was ready to go.
As quick as 40+ years seems to fly by, I was delighted to “bump” into Mark at the Belle Meade pool a few summers ago.
He made me laugh as hard as I laughed 40+years earlier.
As I found out, his disease hit hard and progressed fast. I heard updates of how even as he was suffering, he brought laughter to those around him.
He was one of those unforgettable people
that touch others.
May the Lord bless and love all of the Gerhardt families.

Prayers to the family,
I saw his photo searching for someone and that lead to me reading your beautiful tribute and then I read comments from his family - so heart touching!
It is so hard especially the first year.
I too lost my father to Alzheimer’s.
Memories are now a treasured gift from above to help soothe our hearts. As you reminisce may you feel the love from said memories and each other as you provide support. Christ said it best at John 5:28,29, trust in that as it will help you endure with hope. My deepest sympathy.

Mark’s generous spirit and loyalty defined his character. He consistently gave of himself, whenever he saw a need and knew that he had the skillset and muscle to help, he was there for you without question. Whether leading and motivating a work team, renovating a house or washing dishes, he gave way more than 100%. He spent a lot of time with us at our cottage in NY, helping Gary build a patio and fix up the place.
Mark and I bonded from day one, when I first started dating Gary. An example of his audacious generosity was when he gave me the keys to his 1976 Camero to drive home from Cincinnati to Delaware OH and keep for a week until I returned the following weekend to see Gary again. Mark drove my clunker that week. It was a totally unprompted gift because he knew I admired that snazzy Camero and sensed I would get a kick out of it. And he trusted me with it, which was likely not wise … but he read people well and knew how to connect. That is just who Mark is. No one else like him. He could start a conversation and talk to anyone. And you always knew where you stood with him, good or bad.
Mark is a treasured uncle and and powerful influence for our son Wes and all the nieces and nephews. Big personality, big voice, big love. Total authenticity. Huge commitment to family. Our hearts are broken at this loss, but we are forever blessed to call him ours.

My lamentation over Uncle Mark is deep and profound. His radiant charisma, both generous and amicable, will be long remembered. His intelligence rivalled only by his handy skills was a blessing for us all. Notably passionate, often displaying his humour, he never failed to provide warmth in our lives. Memories of sharing exhilarating roller coaster rides at Kings Island serve as reminders of love and kinship. Even the first incident of my anger became an endearing tale relished by him, such were his lovingly unique perceptions.

I remember spending the night with Uncle Mark and Aunt Jenn, after a long pool day with the family listening to Kenny Chesney, enjoying the sunshine and each other’s company. I woke up the next morning and walked downstairs to Uncle Mark and Aunt Jenn sipping their coffee in their living room, and Uncle Mark saw me and said “Morning, Lib!” And it was a beautiful morning with the sunshine pouring through, and I remember just feeling so happy to be there, and feeling so loved. Such a small memory, that takes up so much room in my heart and brings me so much joy.
