Obituary of Frank E. Smith

Frank E. Smith Feb 4, 1931 – Jan 1, 2024 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Frank E. Smith, who left this world on January 1, 2024. Born in Fremont Center, New York on February 4, 1931 - he touched the lives of those around him in profound ways inspiring all who knew him. Frank served as President/Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Detroit Chamber of Commerce for 16 years until he retired in 1994. Prior to Detroit, he served in a similar capacity in three upstate New York cities (Elmira, Binghamton, Schenectady) then as CEO of the Greater Cincinnati Ohio Chamber of Commerce from 1969 to 1977. Upon graduation in 1952 from Syracuse University with a degree in Advertising, Smith was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Korea, was discharged from active duty as a First Lieutenant in 1954 and remained in the reserves until 1962. He enjoyed serving as an active member of both Armstrong United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, as well as Grosse Pointe Memorial Presbyterian Church while residing in Michigan. While residing in Cincinnati, he was an active Scout leader with all three sons. He loved to sing, play his harmonica, fish, camp, ski & water ski. Frank Smith and Caroline R. Gillin were married in Binghamton, N. Y. in August of 1954. He is survived by his wife Caroline “Connie” and sons: Stephen - Cincinnati; David (Kim) - Atlanta, Georgia; and Daniel (Ileana) – Cleveland, Wisconsin The extended Smith family includes six grandsons, Zac, Michael (Liza), Alex (Kadi), Parker (Katarina), Andrew (Diana), and Diego and a granddaughter Hannah Fischer (Brad). Connie and Frank moved from the Detroit Area to their Northern Michigan, Big Lake, home near Gaylord, Michigan in 2007 and returned to Cincinnati in 2013. Frank was a devoted family man, a loyal friend, and a beacon of kindness to all who knew him. His unwavering love and support touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. As we bid farewell to Frank, we celebrate the memories of his laughter, his wisdom, and the warmth he brought to every room. May he find eternal peace, and may his spirit live on in the cherished moments we shared. A Memorial service will be held on February 24th at 11am, at Old Armstong Chapel with a reception immediately following at the main church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to The Alzheimer’s Foundation or Armstrong Chapel United Methodist Church. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
