Obituary of Edwin N. Hopping

Edwin “Ed” Hopping passed away on April 2, 2024 at the age of 89. He was born in Milford, Ohio on June 11, 1934 and was raised in Batavia, Ohio. In 1953, Ed met his beloved wife, Dolores (nee Martin) “Dee,” at Miami University. They were wed on October 13, 1956 and shared a beautiful marriage of 67 years. Ed proudly served in the Navy from 1956 - 1958, during which time he and Dee traveled throughout Europe together. They eventually settled back in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he attended the University of Cincinnati Law School and began his fulfilling legal career as an attorney. It was also in Cincinnati where Ed and Dee raised their 3 children. In between his time spent in the courtroom and at home, Ed led a life of service and community involvement. He dedicated his time as the President of the Madeira School Board and as a Board Member of the Madeira and Indian Hill Joint Fire District. Ed was known for his generous and kind-hearted nature, which touched the lives of everyone he knew. He cherished time spent with his family and was happiest seated around the table with a winning hand of cards (or a plate of lemon meringue pie). His sense of humor and bright spirit made him the life of every party, and he charmed everyone he met with jokes and stories from his life. Ed took advantage of every opportunity offered to him with a jovial spirit and a smile on his face. The patriarch of a loving family, Ed's legacy includes his children Brad Hopping (Donna), Stephanie Henke (John), and Heather Harris (Rob); 9 grandchildren Christopher Hopping (Amy), Jonathan Hopping (Allison), Geoffrey Hopping, Joshua Henke, Jacob Henke (Kyndal), Samuel Henke (Alyssa), Jack Henke (Lauren), Megan Harris, and Lauren Harris; and 5 great-grandchildren Hazel and Ray Hopping, Lucas and Logan Hopping, and Hughes Henke. Each of them inherited his generosity, kindness, and uncanny ability to crack a smile at just the right moment. He was preceded by his father Paul, mother Thelma (nee Penn), and sister Patricia Osborn. Ed leaves a gap in the family lineup that can't be filled, but his stories will continue to be told with laughter and love. A celebration of Ed's life will be held on April 6, 2024, at Armstrong Chapel, 5125 Drake Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45243. There will be a visitation from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm, followed by a service at 2:00 pm and a reception where light refreshments will be served. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to the Madeira Schools Foundation. Donations to the scholarship fund can be made at https://MSFDonation.givesmart.com to ensure that Ed's love of education is carried forward. Please note your contribution is in memory of Ed Hopping.
