Obituary of Joanne T. Buchman

Joanne Thais Buchman (nee Engbersen) went to be with God in Heaven on Monday, August 5, 2024, at the age of 94. She was surrounded by her loving family. Joanne was a devoted mother to her children, David Buchman, Mary Jo (Kevin) Halter, Nancy Buchman, Allen (Nadine) Buchman, Sandy Buchman, and Teresa (Daniel) Eckert. She was preceded in death by Donald Buchman, her husband of 45 years. She was grandmother to Shelby McLaughlin, Dina Coloma, Cossette, Bradley, and Chantelle Buchman, and Brooke and Tori Eckert. Big sister of Sr. Caroline Engbersen, Sr. Mary Claire SND, and Rita Murphy. Special aunt to Karen Marie Murphy and Michael (ShihChi) Murphy. She was so proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments and would always look for reasons to brag about them to anyone willing to listen. Joanne and Don loved watching their children play sports, perform in marching bands and participate in school plays, concerts and scout groups. She enjoyed taking long walks with her children to local creeks looking for fossils and birds — outings were followed with a visit to Graeters or Aglamesis for ice cream. She began her career as an x-ray technician at General Hospital emergency room — she later continued her career as an x-ray tech for an orthopedic group. She could proudly recite every bone in the human body and was known to help fix a family pet’s broken paw or leg. Joanne had a wanderlust for travel. Her journeys took her around the world and to all 50 states — by plane, train or cruise ship. Once home, she was excited to share stories about the places she visited, the people she met and the sightings of wildlife and birds. She took many trips with Road Scholars and even became a host for their local Cincinnati tours. Joanne was an avid volunteer for location organizations including the out-patient surgery center at Jewish Hospital, delivering bread to local food kitchens, communion to the local Catholic community and ushering at Music Hall and Playhouse in the Park. She took numerous classes at UC’s OLLI Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and especially enjoyed courses in Cincinnati history and geography. She enjoyed playing golf, hiking with friends and socializing with her friends while playing bridge. Each morning she challenged herself with the Cincinnati Enquirer crossword puzzle, in addition she played multiple games of online Scrabble at any given time beating most of her opponents. She was passionate about her garden, tending to her flowers, plants and trees. Her favorite spot was the back porch where she watched for birds at her feeders while hoping to spot deer prancing through the yard. Neighbors knew that they could sit and visit with her on her back porch. Nothing made her happier than having her friends and family stop over. She was the best mom ever — truly an inspiration, role model, fighter and pillar of strength for the family. She was a wonderful person to all that were lucky to have met her. She will be dearly missed. The family will receive friends on Monday, August 12th from 9-10:30AM at Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Rd. (45236) Kenwood. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11AM at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, 7754 Montgomery Rd (45236). Entombment will take place at St. Mary Cemetery in St. Bernard following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Joanne Buchman to The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
