Sorry to miss Dusty's service. We were all set to go out the door when Kazuya checked the roads and we had ice.
Besides being an all-round good person and excellent teacher and scholar, Dusty was one of the founders of the Asian Studies program at UC. Sometime back in the mid '70s Dusty, Barbara Ramusack, Han-kyo Kim and I drove to an Asian Studies conference at Ohio U. During the drive, the four of us did the initial planning for an Asian Studies program at UC. Dusty helped make it happen, and as someone who was really an American historian with an interest in Asia, made our plan more credible to our Western-focused colleagues. Both Kazuya and I saw him as a mentor.

I was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr. Anderson.
As a student of his at Raymond Walters College in the early '70's one had a appreciation for his depth of knowledge and life experiences that brought him to his roll as a college educator after several other careers that preceded it. It gave a multi-dimensional viewpoint brought to the classroom for the benefit of his students. His scholarly work on foreign policy and the Standard Oil Company in the Pacific prior to WWII made him a frequent source of observation on many levels as the nation weathered the gas crisis in the early 1970's.
Years passed and his impact as an instructor remained with me. I was rehabbing a house in Oakley during the '80's and I saw Dr. Anderson coming and going as a new tenant moved in next door. One day as I was working he came to the window to borrow a hammer. He was surprised when I called him Dr. Anderson by name and told him I used to be a student. The years had passed , but the impact remained.
Dr. Anderson's family is in my thoughts. He was a good person with a widespread, long lasting impact on many.

Dusty was very welcoming to me when I joined The Literacy Club as a young member. I delivered a paper there describing a place in Goettingen, Germany. He came up to me afterwards and said (correctly) that "that's the Fridjof Nansen House." My condolences.
