I, along with a lot of other people, loved Ed Betz. I met Eddie over fifty years ago, along with the other "Kooch'ers" I got to feel were an extended family. Ed helped teach me to ski, though I was terrified, he knew I would learn to love it. He also brought Graeter's ice cream in dry ice up to the island and we "staff wives" would meet his pontoon plane on the beach, spoons in hand, waiting for our Eddie treat. I never knew which was the bigger treat, the ice cream or having Eddie back on the Island. My daughter at age 10 asked Ed if he would wait for her to grow up, so she could marry him. That was the effect Ed had on people. Rest in Peace Ed. You deserve it.

Ed Betz was a kind and generous gentleman who inspired those who knew him to focus on the positive in others and in life. As a fellow skier and chaperone with Kee-Way-Din Ski Club, Wasaka Boys Club and the Camping and Education Foundation with John L. Holden while attending the University of Cincinnati, Ed was a positive role model who inspired my work ethic and positive attitude. I work for a company that Mr Betz was stock holder in. I did not know him deeply. There was one time when ,due to a Macintosh matter that , myself & Mr. Bird were asked to meet at Marsh offices. This was years ago.....Mr Betz was late for the meeting ...when he arrived he spoke of something he had just saw / acted upon... I do not recall the details.
What id DO recall most vividly , and has never left me , is that which had kept him was an act of compassion.
Something like we Buddhist might call Bodhicitta.
The sincerity , the heartfelt goodwill,, I was humbled. I was impressed.
I thought : Here is a man ~ " oh good sir, how can my skills help you?" ( I think we did assist with his matter )....
For days after ... I thought about it , returned to it like an example to measure myself against.I have not forgotten.
Such open heart ,no self serving agenda , no vanity -- compassion for compassion sake.
I do not know how many good works it takes to be a good man.
But I choose to use this forum - to give testimony to my fellow human beings of at least this one for which i had the fine fortune to witness.
I say -- he was a good Human Being.
A good man.
{ i first entered this under condolences -- then saw stories - since it may be more proper here I have reEnterd , pardon the dbl )

Edward was one of those truest of friends that my family and I will keep in our hearts forever. Our memories of Ed take us to so many wonderful places that have forever enriched our lives. And, I'm sure we are just one of many friends and families blessed to have known and loved Ed. I especially remember Ed's 76th birthday - August 24th, 1998. My first day of work for Ed, Ken and Pete at Marsh Inc. I was so excited to be part of such an exciting group of people. Edward taught us everything he knew about photography, business, people and places. His passion for life, art and work was amazing. Ed truly had a genuine interest in helping others to become their personal best. I will always look back with happiness on the times we spent with each other... the countless times we enjoyed dinner with clients and friends. One of Ed's favorite places was the Maisonette with Jeff and Cheryl Jones. I believe Ed was their last guest before they closed a few years ago. The endless photoshoots to capture the perfect image. Bill Magness, Erica Stoelb and I struggled to keep pace with Ed from dawn until after midnight for a weeklong holiday shoot on the Peterson's gourmet gift catalog. The competitive games between our rival teams (UC and UofL). Ed always got us the best seats. Dave Reed, Steve Luhn and our families shared some great football and basketball games together. I will always remember our times at Music Hall, Playhouse In The Park and the Aronoff. Missy and I experienced our first opera "Madame Butterfly" with you in 2001 - I must confess that Missy enjoyed your company much more than the opera. The countless number of Broadway musicals. "Wicked" at the Gershwin Theatre, August of 2004 is still are favorite and makes us think of you. The fun we had together with you during our summer and winter vacations in Colorado. My son Ned will never forget tasting his first Buffalo steak with you at the Jerome Hotel in Aspen! My family and I will think of you whenever we hear a John Denver song... so rest assured that we'll all meet again someday in that "Rocky Mountain High".

Seeing Ed was always a highlight of my visits to Marsh. It was such a pleasure to engage him in conversation about his photography career, his trips to Alaska and his beloved camp. A warm and special person, who lived a meaningful life and made a difference in the world...it was a privilege to know him. Rest in peace, Edward - your smile and zest for life will be greatly missed.

Ed Betz, was one of my earliest memories at Camp Kooch-i-Ching. I recall meeting at Holden's home where the bus took off for Minnesota with a full load of kids for Kooch each June. At ten, not knowing many people, I remember Ed sticking out a hand and saying hi and having a confident reassuring happy smile that let a kid know, " hey, you are gonna have great time and be fine. " All that you needed as you struck out on a new adventure into an unknown camp and summer. Further along, Ed always was around taking photos, driving the bus and being there as a mentor and friend over many years of attending Kooch. He was quite simply one of the best guys there. He was obviously super talented and smart, but it was his people skills that I will always remember and the way he could really through quiet confidence inspire people to be their best. I was fortunate enough to recently see him at the celebration in Cincy for the CEF. He will be sorely missed I am sure and I count myself fortunate to have known him over the years.

I am sorry for your loss -- but I also know that he lived a very full life, exactly as he wanted. Edward was a second father to me since I was 16 years old -- and I knew him from the time I was six when he photographed me in a Bounce ad! Edward touched so many peoples' lives. I called John McLean at the Palace and posted information on Ed's Facebook page. A waitress at the National Exemplar contacted me to share stories -- He was such a kind, friendly, generous and loving man. I will see you Wednesday.

Hello Family of Edward Betz, I can't imagine what is will be like when I walk thru the doors of Marsh next month and not see that wonderful, welcoming smile on the face of Edward. Even when I saw him a couple of weeks ago, and he was in SO much pain, he still was quick witted, smart and always happy to see me. I have no choice now but to think of him running all thru heaven, camera around his neck, telling stories starting like.... "look at"..... And seeing his family and laughing that great laugh, and having the time of his life and free of pain..... Gosh I am going to miss him. Enjoy yourself Edward. Do all those things you wanted to do and take those beautiful pictures along the way. I will miss you my friend. See you in heaven.......love, Rise
