Obituary of James P. "Jim" Jurgensen

James Preston Jurgensen, beloved husband of 46 years to Linda L. (nee Hohman), loving father of Jim (Sarah) Jurgensen, Jason (Daphne) Jurgensen, Jackie Jurgensen (Michael) Alf, devoted grandfather of Nicholas, Heidi, Hans, Kurt Jurgensen, Chloe, Claire, JR Jurgensen, John and Jennifer Alf, loving brother of the late John (Mary Jean) Jurgensen and Joan Jurgensen (Reuel) McKee. Uncle to many loving nieces & nephews. Passed away on Wednesday June 28th at the age of 74, surrounded by his family. As owner of the John R. Jurgensen Co. his avid love for the construction industry has left a lasting impression and legacy.

Jim began his construction career as a young boy riding to job sites with his father, the late John R. Jurgensen who was founder of the John R. Jurgensen Co. He continued working on construction jobs in the summer throughout his high school and college years. After finishing college, he joined his mother and brother to run the family business. Following his father’s early death, Jim assumed a management role at a young age as he and his brother Jack worked together to expand the company. In 1986, Jim’s brother passed away suddenly and Jim took over the helm of the company. He continued to seek growth opportunities and expand the company to what it is now a successful highway construction and materials business in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.

Throughout his career, Jim was Chairman of and/or sat on the Board with various associations including the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), Flexible Pavements of Ohio (FPO), the Ohio Contractor’s Association (OCA) and the National Asphalt Paving Association (NAPA). Jim was a proponent of continuing education. He was on the Board at the University of Cincinnati and contributed to several scholarship funds for students interested in entering the construction business as well as offering co-operative learning opportunities to students. He worked with UC to establish a heavy civil endowment to provide a core curriculum to further the science of highway engineering & construction.

Jim’s love for his family was without question the most important part of his life. Spending time with his family and 9 grandchildren at his home around the pool always brought a smile to his face. You could sense his heart felt complete as he enjoyed these days.
